Lead exposure, whether it’s paint, dust, soil and/or water, can be extremely harmful to young children. Most individual states as well as the federal government regulate both the inspection and abatement processes in residences and daycare facilities that have children under the age of six. The State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection Lead Management Regulations (Chapter 424) outline the standards and protocols for lead services here within the state. The Department of Human Services Maine Lead Poisoning Prevention Program regulated residences after a child has been poisoned Both DHS and DEP work in cooperation to address the lead hazards that had been identified. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also has regulations in place to address lead services when dealing with properties receiving federal monies.
Worker protection when disturbing lead containing components in general industry is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which defines the criteria for both worker and environmental safety. Lead testing and monitoring may be performed to identify proper controls to be utilized.
